Brief on the Organization:
The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is working towards building a healthier India. It is helping to address the limited institutional and systems capacity in India by strengthening education and training, advancing research and technology and facilitating policy and practice in the area of Public Health. PHFI is headquartered in New Delhi with national presence through its constituent units of regional Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs) and Centers of Applied Research in core public health themes. The Foundation, established in 2006 as a public private initiative, is governed by an independent board comprising of senior government officials, eminent Indian and International academic and leaders, civil society representatives and corporate leaders. For more information, please visit the website www.phfi.org.
IIT Bombay has set up a National Disease Modelling Consortium (Consortium), with initial seed funding support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USA (Foundation). The institute is the anchor organization for the multi-institutional Consortium, supporting programmatic and policy decisions on infectious diseases through transmission and system modelling. The modelling work will act as a bridge between control and elimination of infectious diseases and help in strengthening integrated disease surveillance. This Consortium aims to focus on four disease groups initially: (i): Tuberculosis, (ii): Malaria, (iii): Vaccine Preventable Diseases (including measles-rubella, human papillomavirus and typhoid) and (iv): Neglected Tropical Diseases (including Lymphatic Filariasis and Visceral Leishmaniasis). The scope may be expanded in future to other communicable and non-communicable diseases and other health programmes, based on emerging needs and priorities of the Government of India and State governments and available resources. In this regard an MOU between IIT Bombay and PHFI/IIPHD has been signed in February, 2024 to conduct the modelling work in the Tuberculosis (TB) disease, one of the focus disease groups of the Consortium. Under this project, we aim to evaluate the impact of nutrition supplementation and its timeliness on TB treatment completion, success rates, reinfection, and mortality (through systematic review) and to estimate the long-term impact of NPY in increasing successful TB treatment outcomes and reducing TB-associated mortality among patients undergoing DOTS/DOTS-Plus, with a target assessment for the year 2030 using mathematical modelling approach.
