G Anil Kumar, PhD, has an interdisciplinary background in demography, population health research, and statistics. Dr. Kumar has contributed to many large-scale epidemiology and health system studies in India over the last two decades. His research experience encompasses studies on estimation of mortality, estimation of cause of death, disease burden and risk factor distribution for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and a variety of unintentional and intentional injuries, and health systems research. He has successfully developed data management systems to manage databases for large-scale studies by developing methods to ensure high level of data accuracy and standardization in data documentation. He directs the data across the research studies and oversees its validation, and has extensive skills in quantitative analytical methods. He has contributed to capacity-building in statistics and research methods.
Dr. Kumar has published nearly 200 articles in peer-reviewed international and national journals. He is a member of Scientific Advisory Committee for Indian Council of Medical Research–Regional Medical Research Centre, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was awarded the Endeavour Research Fellowship from the Government of Australia in 2009. He has received Bharat Vikas Award for outstanding performance in the field of health system assessment at National Seminar on Diversity of Culture and Social Environment in Bhubaneswar, in 2017. Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Gold Medal Award for outstanding performance in the field of health research at National Conference on Economic Growth Though Individual Contribution in Bangalore, in 2018.
Dr. Kumar obtained his PhD in Demography from the University of Kerala, India and has trained in biostatistics. He previously served as Research Manager at the George Institute for International Health – India, Hyderabad. He Worked at Administrative Staff College of India in Hyderabad and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College in Pondicherry and was involved in research on reproductive and child health programme in the state of Kerala.
