Aditi Iyer is a question-driven inductive researcher with an abiding interest in understanding and addressing unjust social inequalities in health. Her multi-disciplinary academic background includes a PhD in Public Health from the University of Liverpool after a Masters’ degree in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences and undergraduate training in Sociology.
Aditi was a Goran Sterky Fellow at the Division of International Health Care Research, Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. She was also Fellow of the University, School of Population, Community and Behavioural Sciences, University of Liverpool.
She is currently Deputy Director of the Ramalingaswami Centre on Equity and Social Determinants of Health, Bengaluru. Prior to joining PHFI, Aditi was Research Coordinator of the Gender and Health Equity Project at the Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. She played an important role in this long-standing field project on maternal safety and rights in Koppal district (Karnataka) that generated cutting-edge empirical research, innovative research methodologies and equity-focused strategies with communities and health providers, as well as exciting knowledge translation initiatives.
Aditi has served as Guest Faculty at several reputed Indian universities, mentored younger researchers, and supervised doctoral work at Karolinska Institutet, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Achutha Menon Centre for Health Sciences Studies. She has also been part of advisory, steering and review committees for research projects and institutes in India.
Her outputs include research-linked publications in peer reviewed journals and edited books, knowledge translation-linked handbooks as well as teaching material, including an online course on gender and intersectionality in health policy and systems.

Aditi’s research interests and work focus on several interconnected themes: intersecting social inequalities in health and well-being across the life course; health and health systems in urbanising societies; sexual and reproductive health and rights; maternal safety and rights; as well as innovative methodologies attuned to the workings of power in research and in health systems; strategies to advance health equity in communities; knowledge translation; and research ethics.
