The Public Health Foundation of India (henceforth referred as “PHFI” or “the Society”) is registered
under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 vide registration certificate number 54840 dated
February 08, 2006. The main object of the Society is to redress the limited institutional capacity in
India for strengthening training, research and policy development in the area of public health.
The Society is a public private initiative that has collaboratively evolved through consultations with
multiple constituencies including Indian and international academia, state and central
governments, multi & bi-lateral agencies and civil society groups. Structured as an independent
foundation, PHFI adopts a broad, integrative approach to public health, tailoring its endeavours to
Indian conditions and bearing relevance to countries facing similar challenges and concerns.
PHFI is ranked 2nd among the Schools of Public Health globally as a part of the Public Health
Academic Ranking (published in March 2024 in the International Journal of Public Health). The
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine topped the global rankings and the Harvard
School of Public Health was ranked third globally.
PHFI is recognised as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation by the Department of Science
and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India since
2008.
PHFI is a member of WHO-PMNCH (the world’s largest alliance for Women, Children and
Adolescents’ Health), Global Health Workforce Alliance, WHO Health Data Collaborative, GEMNET-
Health and several other collaborative initiatives. WHO has nominated PHFI as one of 13 CSOs in
the WHO-Global Climate and Health Alliance.
MoHFW has recognised the PHFI Centre for Environmental Health as a “Centre of Excellence” for
Climate-Resilient Healthcare and green health facilities.

Income Tax Act, 1961
The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) has been granted an exemption under Section 12A
of the Income Tax Act, 1961, with registration number AABAP4445LE20214 for the assessment
years 2022-23 to 2026-27.
PHFI has been granted approval under section 80G of Income Tax Act 1961 for the assessment
years 2022-23 to 2026-27 with registration number AABAP4445L24DL01
PHFI has been granted approval under section 35 (1) (ii) of Income Tax Act 1961 for its scientific
research activities as per Gazette notification no 13/2010 dated 5th March 2010 and the
renewal done up to the Assessment Year 2026–27, with registration number
AABAP4445LG20215.
Corporate Social Responsibility Registration
PHFI is registered for undertaking CSR activities, and the Registration number is CSR00001071.
GST Registration
PHFI has registered under Goods & Service Tax (GST) vide registration No. 07AABAP4445L1ZC
Status under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010
PHFI is registered under The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 (FCRA)/ Foreign Contribution
(Regulation) Rules, 2011, vide number 231660927. The current FCRA Renewal Registration is valid till
31st March 2029.
Donations
PHFI also receives donations for implementation of public health activities as per the mandate of
the organization. Such donations receive tax benefit under the IT Act.
Tax Benefits
PHFI is registered under section 80G of the Income Tax Act 1961 and all donations to PHFI (other
than covered u/s Section 35) are entitled for claiming deduction of 50% of the amount donated
from income.
The Foundation is also approved by the Central Government under Section 35(1) (ii) of the Income
Tax Act, 1961 (Act) in the category of organisations engaged in scientific research.
Contribution for scientific research undertaken by PHFI are eligible for a weighted deduction of
100% of the amount of expenditure (contribution) emanating out of ‘Income from Business and
Profession’ u/s 35(1)(ii).
