Ministry of Education, on the advice of the UGC, declared ‘PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences, Kismatpur, Hyderabad, Telangana’ along with two constituent units at Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar as an Institution deemed to be University under distinct category  vide Notification dated 17th June 2025.  The Notification has been published in Gazette of India.

The Indian Institute of Public Health – Gandhinagar (IIPHG) has been granted University status by a legislative act of Gujarat state in May 2015.

The IIPHs serve as academic institutions dedicated to advancing public health education, research, and policy development. Each institute works to address local health challenges through public health education, research and training programs. The IIPHs aim at strengthening India's public health system by developing a highly skilled and competent work force and play a crucial role in addressing the shortage of trained public health professionals in India. They offer high-quality, India-specific programs comparable to the best institutions worldwide.
