What is Public Health?

Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities by - 

  •  It is about helping people to stay healthy and protecting them from threats to their health.
  • Public health is about the health of the population as a whole.

  • 2006

    Launch of Public Health Foundation.



  • 2007

    Bhoomi Pujan for permanent campus of IIPH Gandhinagar.


    Publication and Dissemination of the Lancet Series on Universal Access to Healthcare in India.

  • 2008

    Establishment of IIPH - Gandhinagar, Delhi and Hyderabad. Launch of PGDPHM for National Health Mission and Diploma Programmes (Health Economics and Bio Statistics).


    PHFI recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.


    The institutional Ethics Committee formulated.


    BMGF awarded a grant on the 'Partnership for Sustained Impact (PSI)’ to provide techno-managerial and financial support to NACP III.


  • 2009

    Awarded a Wellcome Trust capacity-building grant for faculty development.


    Launch of Project STEPS, a multi-component, comprehensive tobacco control programme in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, India.


  • 2010

    Establishment of IIPH– Bhubaneshwar.


    Technical and Administrative Secretariat of the High-Level Expert Group on Universal Health Coverage.




  • 2011

    Distance Learning Education Programmes Launched. PHFI registered as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO), by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.


    Established South Asian Hub for Advocacy, Research & Education on Mental Health (SHARE).



  • 2012

    PHFI accorded status of a Nodal Centre of the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (WHO). The Centre for Environment Health (CEH) was launched in August 2012.


    PHFI accorded the status of a Global Nodal Centre of the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (WHO).


    Conducted an independent evaluation of the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) for MoHFW-GoI.


    MOHFW entered into an MOU with PHFI to implement activities geared towards strengthening the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).



  • 2013

    Launch of Integrated MSc & PhD in Health Informatics and Clinical Research


    Organised The International Conference on Public Health Priorities in the 21st Century: The Endgame for Tobacco.


    Launch of “No More Tobacco in the 21st Century” (NMT21C) – a youth campaign, as the vanguard of a global movement to eliminate tobacco.




  • 2014

    International Diabetes Federation awards Certificate of Excellence to PHFI’s primary care training programme. 


    ‘Swasthya Slate’ (the electronic tablet for point-of-care diagnostics, introduced for RMNCH+A implementation in J&K by National Health Mission.







  • 2015

    Launch of MPH programme at IIPH –Gandhinagar and Hyderabad IIPH – Gandhinagar accorded University Status under the State Act.


    Establishment of Indian Institute of Public Health – Shillong Bhoomi Pujan of Permanent campus of IIPH – Hyderabad.


    PHFI and partners undertook State-level disease burden estimation in India.



  • 2016

    The permanent campus of IIPH Gandhinagar was formally inaugurated in October 2016.





  • 2017

    Launched a collaborative initiative for the India State Level Disease Burden Disease Initiative (ICMR/PHFI/IHME).

  • 2018

    Won the FICCI - Healthcare Excellence Awards 2018 (10th Edition) for Skill Development.


    Swasthya Sahayak, a point-of- care Bluetooth-enabled device, that integrates multiple diagnostics, and enables various interventions.

  • 2019

    PHFI Signed and MoU with the National Health Authority to partner in advancing the implementation and evaluation of Ayushman Bharat. 


    Regional Mentor Institute to strengthen the capacities of early-career researchers from the WHO region.



  • 2020

    PHFI was positioned 1st in Research ranking, 2nd in Societal Ranking, and 10th in Innovation Ranking in India in the Scimago.


    Institutional Ranking 2020. Institutional Ethics Committee registered under the Department of Health Research (DHR).


    Stanford University listed 4 PHFI Senior Researchers in the world’s top 2% of Scientists ranking.


    Secured the top rank in the Health sector category in the SCIMAGO Institutional Rankings among all Indian Institutes.


    Provided technical support to MoHFW for operationalising National Tobacco Testing Labs.


    Awarded a grant from Medical Research Council (UK) for exploring the Implementation of  Peer Education programme for improving adolescent health under India's National Adolescent Health Strategy.


  • 2021

    PHFI received the Clarivate India Research Excellence - Citation Award 2021(Powered by Web of Science), in the Medical and Health Sciences Category.


    Capacity-building support to National AIDS Control Program (NACO).


  • 2022

    Established NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions.

  • 2024

    PHFI received a Letter of Intent from the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to establish a Deemed-to-be-University (distinct category).


    Recognized as the second top public health institution globally as per the Public Health Academic Ranking (PHAR).


    Secured the top rank in the Health sector category in the SCIMAGO Institutional Rankings among all Indian Institutes.



  • 2025

    PHFI received notification form the Ministry of  Education, Government of India, on 17 June 2025, granting Institution deemed-to-be University status in the distinct category to "PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences, Kismatpur, Hyderabad, Telangana".


    PHFI has been recognised as an ICMR Collaborating Centre of Excellence (ICMR-CCOE) for conducting Biomedical Research in India from 2024 to 2029.


    Launch of Injury Prevention Research Centre, a dedicated hub for advancing injury research, capacity building, and policy translation.


    Launch of PHFI Centre for Developmental and Lifecourse Research (PHFI-CDLR).
