Payment: Rs.30/minute audio (i.e. simultaneously translating & transcribing a 50 minute regional language audio file into an English transcript would pay Rs. 1500)


PHFI calls for application from eligible candidates with skills on Transcription/translation and computerized data entry for specific research projects. The selected candidate will be able to transcribe and translate from at least one of the following language to English

  1. Hindi
  2. Bengali and
  3. Odiya

Details of the call are as provided below.

Job Overview / statements of duties:

These positions are short term project assignment(s) with specific research project(s) run by Public Health Foundation of India. A total of 10 people from the shortlist of qualified applicants will be empanelled for the purpose. There is no guarantee of regular work contracts but jobs will be entrusted on an assignment basis as and when required, with a payment based on the duration of interviews to be translated and transcribed. Translation cum Transcription consultants will simultaneously translate and transcribe audio recordings of in-depth interviews (IDIs) and/or focus group discussions (FGDs) from one of the three local (Hindi/Bengali/Odiya) languages recordings to typed translations in English.

Specific duties and terms:

  • Download the MP3 audio recording of the IDI or FGD, to be send by email from PHFI
  • Listen to the audio recording and type into a word processing file (i.e. Microsoft Word) exactly what is being said in the best possible English translation.
  • Send this transcript back to the study liaison by email.
  • Delete the MP3 audio file and transcript from your hard-drive when requested to do so by the study team

When offered an assignment (i.e. when asked if the consultant would like to translate/transcribe an audio file into a typed word document) only accept if the consultant can complete the assignment within five business days. The consultants are under no obligation to accept any given assignment and PHFI is under no obligation to offer (regular) assignments.

The assignment is complete only after the transcript has been checked and approved by PHFI. When the transcript has been approved, the consultant will be informed and s/he may raise an invoice to PHFI for payment.

Competencies / Skill sets required:

  • Fluency in local language (Hindi or Bengali Or Odiya) and English
  • Highly skilled at typing in English
  • Familiar with word processing software (MS Word)
  • Able to download and quickly master the use of a free transcription assistance software (Express Scribe)
  • Professionalism and high ethical standards
  • Attention to detail, including the use of correct English spelling and appropriate transcription punctuation
  • Astute linguistic capabilities: highly effective at translating spoken local language to English, including concern for selecting the most appropriate words
  • Effective time-management skills to ensure capacity to meet deadlines

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

Required Experience:

  • Prior transcription and translation experience beneficial

Other Requirements:

  • To have own working arrangements for finishing the work in time: a computer with essential word processing software/ internet connectivity. PHFI will not be liable to cover any costs in this regard.
  • Performance Measures:

    • Completing the transcription/translation of a MP3 audio recording within five business days.
    • Accurately translating the audio from one of the three local languages into the best possible English approximation. It is not acceptable to summarize, but a sentence-by-sentence comprehensive translation/transcription will be essential.
    • The acceptance of the work will be subject to the satisfactory work verification by the designated reporting official from PHFI. If there are gaps found in the work, you would be required to complete the work correcting the shortcomings, within 2 days of such requests, based on the specific comments made by the reporting official.
