Senior Research Scientist and Associate Professor
Sreeparna finished her A.M. and Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology and the Population Studies Centre at Brown University. Her research in the last eleven years has focused on the ways in which gender disadvantages interacting with socioeconomic inequities, shape women’s life trajectories. She has worked on a range of public health issues such as the prevention of Thalassemia in West Bengal, HIV/AIDS prevention in Mumbai, domestic violence in Mumbai and Bangalore, and maternal health in Assam. In addition to health, Sreeparna also has expertise and scholarly publications on gender inequities in education, child sexual abuse, feminist jurisprudence, intimate partner violence among female sex workers and marital dissolution in India using Census data.
Sreeparna’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and the Population Reference Bureau in the United States. Her work has been published in journals such as Reproductive Health Matters, Social Science and Medicine, Culture Health and Sexuality, and Economic and Political Weekly, among others. Her work has also been covered by the national press in India, as well as internationally by the BBC. She has been a regular writer for Feminism in India, an intersectional feminist digital initiative.
Her most recent projects in PHFI focus on the institutional contexts of disrespectful and abusive behaviour that women experience during childbirths. The second focuses on accountability mechanisms for sexual and reproductive health and rights.
In addition to research, Sreeparna enjoys teaching and has taught at institutions in India and abroad and at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral levels. She continues to be excited about teaching and is especially interested in teaching social determinants of health, research ethics and research methodology.
