Rajalakshmi Ram Prakash
Research Scientist & Assistant Professor

Rajalakshmi Ram Prakash is a seasoned academician and activist working on the intersections of gender, laws, ethics, human rights, public health and health systems. She comes with 18 years of rich experience in handling multi centric projects, research studies, teaching and consultancies with reputed institutes. Rajalakshmi has a Doctorate and a Master degree from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai) and a PG Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics from National Law School of India University (Bengaluru). She is trained in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research.

In her previous tenure as Assistant Professor at Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Rajalakshmi spear headed the Healthcare Management program, developing curriculum for both MOOC and offline formats. She teaches Healthcare Laws & Ethics, Public Health, Research & Publication Ethics, Gender and Social Determinants of Health, Organizational Behaviour, Human Resource Management. She has mentored several postgraduate students’ research projects.

Rajalakshmi’s work on Informed Consent in Reproductive Health Services and Gender Analysis of Universal Health Coverage schemes have been cited in United Nations policy documents. She has been consulted by the National Health Mission of Government of Tamil Nadu, WHO, UNICEF, UNESCO and OXFAM. She has published more than 30 knowledge products and is a peer reviewer for many reputed journals.

Rajalakshmi has been the recipient of awards and scholarships including Harvard School of Public Health (USA) in Ethical Issues in International Health Research and the Health and Population Innovation Fellowship (MacArthur Foundation & Population Council). She was the winner of Health Systems Global and Ford Foundation small grants for her work on gender analysis of Publicly Funded Health Insurance Schemes.

Rajalakshmi is a deeply committed mother of two, wife and daughter.

Research Summary and Interests

Rajalakshmi’s research have focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights, informed consent, universal health coverage, health insurance (private and public), sexuality education, adolescent health, mental health, LGBTQIA+ health and rights, abortion access and rights, health of women workers and urban health. She is currently researching gender integration in government health programs, mental health of adolescents during COVID19, girls’ and women’s health and wellbeing through capability approach, and intersectional inequalities in the context of publicly funded health insurance schemes.
