Professor Sanjay Zodpey

Prof. Sanjay Zodpey presently works as Vice President – Academics, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi and also holds leadership position as Director at Indian Institute of Public Health, Delhi. He is appointed as Adjunct Faculty at Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, Georgia Southern University, Georgia, Adjunct Professor in Public Health Leadership, Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, Honorary Professor, Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney, Australia, Honorary Professor, School of Health and Social Development, Faculty of Health, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, Adjunct Faculty, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, CSIR, Chennai and Visiting Professor of Public Health, Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), Lalitpur, Nepal. He also served as Director of Indian Institutes of Public Health at Gandhinagar and Bhubaneswar. Earlier he worked as Professor at Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, Faculty in Clinical Epidemiology Unit and Vice Dean at Government Medical College, Nagpur, India. He also worked as Professor and Head at the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, Shri VN Government Medical College, Yavatmal, India.

His background as a physician, epidemiologist, scientist and thought leader on public health uniquely position him to drive the global public health agenda. Prof. Zodpey completed all his medical education – MBBS, MD and PhD from Government Medical College, Nagpur, India. He has also acquired post-graduate qualifications in Sociology, Public Administration and Economics from Nagpur University. He is Fellow of the Indian Public Health Association (IPHA) and Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM). He is also a Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences and several professional associations. He has also earlier provided leadership to IAPSM as the President and Secretary of Maharashtra Chapter. He is the Chair of Global Evaluation and Monitoring Network for Health [GEMNet-Health] and provides leadership to several public health initiatives globally through this network. Recently, he has been appointed Board Member of Routine Health Information Network, Inc [RHINO], Boston, USA. He is the Chair of Research Advisory Council of National Institute of Miners’ Health, Ministry of Mines, Government of India. He has been active member of INCLEN and participated in various INCLEN initiatives. He is involved in IndiaCLEN Program Evaluation Network since its inception. He is a member of various technical task forces and academic committees constituted by Universities, Professional Councils and State and Central Government.

Prof. Zodpey has been involved in several major national and international research initiatives, which have contributed significantly to the field of public health. He has vast experience of research collaboration with national and international agencies, academic and research institutions and organizations, development partners and governments. His collaborative, context specific and solutions-oriented approach to public health is respected worldwide. His initial research work mainly focused on occupational health, infectious diseases and vaccines. He is currently engaged in several research projects related to maternal and child health, vaccines and human resources for health. He has been investigator for more than 125 research, program development, technical assistance and capacity development projects supported by various donor agencies, development partners and governments. He is the recipient of numerous honors and research awards. Prof. Zodpey has authored more than 325 scientific publications in international and Indian peer reviewed-journals. He has been faculty for over 150 workshops dealing with various aspects of research methods, epidemiology and public health. He is the Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Public Health and Associate Editor of Frontiers in Public Health Education and Promotion. He serves as a Member of Editorial Board for 18 peer-reviewed journals.

His current professional interests include global health, health systems research, maternal and child health, vaccines, health workforce development and education of health professionals. Prof. Zodpey is involved in designing and implementing several capacity development initiatives including on-campus and distance learning academic programs at PHFI. He is also involved in several initiatives related to education for health professionals including landscaping, estimation of demand and supply of various categories of health professionals, designing competency driven frameworks, assessment of impact of educational initiatives on performance of health professionals and research in governance of education for health professionals. He has authored two monographs related to education of health professionals in India. He is the Country Lead for Asia Pacific Network on Health Professional Education Reforms [ANHER] and Country Focal Point for Asia Pacific Action Alliance for Human Resources for Health [AAAH]. Earlier, he served as Member on Institute Of Medicine [IOM, Washington DC] Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. As the voice of academic medicine and public health he also speaks extensively on the need to transform health professional education for creating competent and motivated health professionals.
