Dr. Sakthivel Selvaraj
Director, Health Economics, Financing and Policy

Sakthivel Selvaraj currently holds the position of Director, Health Economics, Financing and Policy, at the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi. He is currently engaged in research, teaching and advocacy in the area of health systems, and in specific, health care financing and access to medicines. He was a Takemi Fellow (Post-Doctoral Fellow at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, US) and a Fulbright Scholar during 2006-07. He has a Ph.D. in Health Economics (1996-2001) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Sakthivel Selvaraj contributed significantly to the development of HLEG (High Level Expert Group) report on UHC. Similarly, he contributed immensely to the development of State Health Policy of Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, he was engaged as a Health Economist in the National Commission on Macroeconomics and Health (NCMH), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi during 2004-05. Sakthivel Selvaraj was the Founder Secretary of Indian Health Economics Association.
He has published two books and has over 30 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Also contributes regularly about health policy developments in national dailies. Besides, he has to his credit several reports involving evidence generation and policy direction at the national and state level that was submitted to funding agencies and governments.

Professional Affiliations

He is currently and has been an Expert in few Government Committees, WHO Committees. As a Technical Consultant, Sakthivel Selvaraj has been engaged in producing and training National Health Accounts in SEARO WHO region. And as a Temporary Advisor, he has been involved in Technical Meetings/Workshops of SEARO WHO in the area of Access to Medicines.

Research Summary and Interests

Sakthivel Selvaraj has contributed significantly in the area of health systems in the past. His recent contributions in the area of health care financing include National Health Accounts (NHA), resource tracking, costing of health care, health insurance evaluations, equity in health care finance and delivery, etc. In the area of medicines, his contributions include assessing financial burden of medicines to households, procurement and supply chain of medicines, market structure of pharmaceuticals, drug price regulation, pharmaceutical patents and rational use of medicines.

He has published two books and has over 30 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Also contributes regularly about health policy developments in national dailies.
