Aditi Iyer
Deputy Director

Aditi Iyer is an experienced inductive researcher with an enduring interesting in understanding and addressing unjust social inequalities in health. Her multi-disciplinary academic background includes a PhD in Public Health from the University of Liverpool after a Masters’ degree in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences and undergraduate training in Sociology. Aditi was also a Goran Sterky Fellow at the Division Of International Health Care Research, Department Of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm

She is currently Deputy Director of the Ramalingaswami Centre on Equity and Social Determinants of Health, Bengaluru. Prior to joining PHFI as Senior Research Scientist, Aditi was Research Coordinator of the Gender and Health Equity (GHE) Project at the Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. She played an important role in this long-standing field project on maternal safety and rights in Koppal district (Karnataka) that produced cutting-edge research insights, innovative research methodologies and equity-focused strategies with communities and health providers, as well as exciting knowledge translation initiatives.

Aditi has also served as Guest Faculty at several universities, mentored younger researchers, and supervised doctoral work at Karolinska Institutet and Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Her outputs include research-linked publications in peer reviewed journals and edited volumes, as well as knowledge translation-linked handbooks and teaching material. She is one of the lead contributors to an online course on gender and intersectionality in health policy and systems.

Research Summary and Interests

Aditi’s research interests focus on intersecting social inequalities in health (including ageing) and health systems, innovative research methodologies that address and capture the workings of power in health systems, strategies to advance health equity in communities, knowledge translation, sexual and reproductive health and rights, maternal safety and rights, health policy and systems.
