Prof D Prabhakaran is a cardiologist and epidemiologist by training. He graduated from Bangalore Medical College, received his MD (Medicine) and DM (Cardiology) degrees from AIIMS. He has done MSc in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University, Canada and has a career commitment to preventive cardiology.He was Additional Professor of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi till 2007. Recognising his achievements the Royal College of Physicians London elected him as an honorary fellow (FRCP) in May 2011. In addition to his positions at PHFI he holds professorship at the London School of Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK,and Emory University, Atlanta, USA. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences in India. He is head of WHO Collaborating Centre for Surveillance, Capacity Building and Translational Research in Cardio-Metabolic Diseases in the SEARO region.

His work spans from mechanistic research to understand the causes for increased propensity of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among south Asians to translational research for developing solutions for its prevention and control. He has participated in several major international and national research studies including the INTERHEART Study, the CREATE Registry, ICMR and DST funded studies, British Heart Foundation funded projects on low birth weight among migrant Gujaratis, Wellcome trust funded impact of intra-country migration on CHD, the NIH sponsored STICH trial and the India Health Study.He is currently involved in many community based prevention programmes, strategic clinical trials and observational studies, being a PI or Co-investigator of several internationally funded grants including prestigious grants from NIH and Wellcome Trust.

He is a member of several international bodies, on the review board of national and international journals and reviewer for national and international research funding agencies and a referee for scientific paper assessments for several international and national journals. He is a member the executive council of the International Society of Hypertension and member of the Board of Directors (council) of The International Society for Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention and World Hypertension League.

At a policy level he has assisted the Government of India in formulating the National Programme for Prevention of Cardiovascular diseases, Stroke, diabetes and cancer, helped the World Bank in developing the regional policy note on NCDs for SAARC countries and assisted the WHO (SEARO) in their capacity building and capacity strengthening programme of the SEARO countries. He was co-editor of Global Heart which is the official Journal of the World Heart Federation in 2011-2012. He is also the Lead Editor of the CVD volume of the latest Disease Control Priorities Project. He has mentored over 30 researchers and has authored over 250 scholarly papers (H-index: 43).
