About the course

Cancer is the second most common non-communicable disease in India with alarming increases being predicted in the coming years due to increases in life expectancy as well as risk factors. In the absence of any population based methods for early detection or screening, cancer in India presents mostly at a later stage when associated mortality and morbidity are very high. A large number of these cancers are preventable with tobacco alone responsible for almost 40% of all cancers. Also, while such a large number of cancer patients present at late stage there is a stark lack of knowledge and resources for palliative care for cancer patients. Given this context, there are very few formal courses that provide structured knowledge about cancer and cancer research in the Indian context. In order to bridge this lacuna is knowledge and approach towards cancer research we are now offering a workshop on cancer research and control which addresses topics listed below.

This workshop will enable the participants to learn skills related to statistical analysis and multivariate regression modeling and, designing and conducting common studies used in cancer epidemiology.

Contents

  • Cancer epidemiology basics
  • Cancer registration
  • Cancer biology and genetics
  • Epidemiological studies in cancer research with focus on case-control studies
  • Cancer biomarkers
  • Cancer risk factors including tobacco, diet, infectious agents, occupation
  • Women cancers
  • Cancer prevention including early detection and screening
  • Palliative care in cancer

Who should attend?

This workshop will be suitable for researchers involved in cancer research in India, physicians working in cancer hospitals, health professionals and managers involved in national programmes for cancer registration, control and prevention, and finally health professionals involved in various NGOs and donor agencies who need a better comprehension of the cancer scenario in India.
